A pack of rabid fanboys managed to surround Shigeru Miyamoto after the Nintendo press conference yesterday and were able to extract some juicy information about the next installment of Zelda before he managed to escape in a puff of white smoke. Evidently, the oompa-loompas at Nintendo headquarters are already hard at work on the new Zelda, with some cross pollination going on between the DS and Wii teams. Does this mean that we can expect follow-ups on both the handheld and console machines? Almost certainly. Here is what Miyamoto had to say about the progress on the new game:
"The Zelda team is currently busy with new Zelda titles. The permanent members of the team have been working on the series for a long time, and they remain busy. They are now hard at work on a new title. And of course we have the Zelda DS team, and some members from that team have changes with employees from the Wii team and are now also working on a new Zelda Wii... I personally think that the game will not drastically change, but I do believe the Zelda series must undergo some changes. The team is currently hard at work to see what those changes could be."
What changes will be made to the long-standing Zelda formula is anybody's guess, although there has been some speculation that the new game could take a first-person perspective to more closely resemble to Metroid Prime franchise. If that turns out to be the case, we will be genuinely shocked. A first-person Zelda would be a sacrilege, we say.
