Nintendo delivered a massive one-two punch to the games industry yesterday at their media event in Tokyo. The company unveiled dozens of upcoming titles for both the DS and Wii systems. However, no announcement was as exciting as the news that Punch Out is under development for the Wii. The much-loved franchise began life as an instant classic in the arcades and on the NES back in 1987. A follow up, Super Punch Out, was almost as well-liked as the first game when it arrived on the SNES. Along with the Super Mario franchise, Punch Out is perhaps one of the defining games of the 8-bit era, and despite its age, the first-person boxing game remains completely enjoyable today.

The first trailer for Punch Out is simply awesome. Familiar characters Little Mac, Glass Joe and King Hippo are rendered in gorgeous, cell-shaded 3D. And don't even get us started about the amazing music! Nintendo could release the game today with these graphics and we would be happy. Unfortunately, we have to wait until 2009, as the company polishes what will surely be a remarkable return to form. Wii Controls, OMG!
